On your course of researching on health insurance, you might have come across a number of points that are actually myths.
These can lead you to make wrong choices when selecting a cover.
Below are some common myths that you may not know about health cover.
Health Insurance: Common Myths
1. Your pre-existing exclusions start over when you switch providers: This is not true. Most insurance companies used a standard system which enables customers to transfer to a new provider and not lose the cover status of any pre-existing conditions.
2. You have to give a full medical history: Some insurers may require you to fill a past health history form and may follow up with your doctor to find out any pre-existing conditions that you may have. When a medical history is required, the insurer will tell you which pre-existing conditions are covered or exempted from the start of the policy. Keep in mind that any conditions that you may have developed five years before the policy may be covered at the start of the policy.
3. Every condition is covered: Most health insurance providers do not cover severe ailments. These are illnesses that are considered incurable or those that generally last for a long time. With the conditions, treatment is usually meant to reduce the symptoms rather than cure it. Examples of such conditions include diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, heart attack, etc.
Health Insurance: Pre-Existing Conditions
4. Pre-existing conditions are not covered: This is true in the United States, where health insurance is more widespread. However, it is not the case in NZ. At the start of a policy, many insurers will not offer cover for any condition that you have suffered in the past.
However, when you have had the policy for two years and have not suffered the condition, it can be covered. If you last suffered the condition five or more years before you took the policy and a doctor declared you “cured”, you may be covered for the condition immediately at the start of the policy.
