Southern Cross Healthcare
As one of NZ’s best known and trusted brands, Southern Cross Healthcare offers a wide range of health-related services to over 100 thousand New Zealand families.
The health insurance part of the organization is Southern Cross Medical Care Society. It is a not-not-for-profit Friendly Society, and has been set up for the benefit of its members.
Southern Cross Medical Care Society has a strong financial position. International rating agency Standard & Poor’s (Australia) Pty Limited affirmed its insurer financial strength rating for Southern Cross as A+ (strong) on 21 February 2007.
As a market leader for over 40 years, the organization processes over 500,000 claims every 12 months.
Through insurance brokers nationwide, Southern Cross offers a Health Insurance product called VIP. They also distribute Wellbeing cover which is an almost identical policy to VIP (we are happy to discuss the differences when we send your quote). Southern Cross reimburses reasonable changes (as defined in the policy) up to policy maximums. For major surgery cover is provided up to $75,000. A range of excesses are available.
The product also allows for optional inclusion of a Specialist and Diagnostic testing benefit (VIP2) with no excess.

The main Tower Health Insurance product is called Premier Health and it provides 100% reimbursement of reasonable changes (as defined in the policy) up to policy maximums. For major surgery cover is provided up to $300,000. A range of excesses is available. The product also allows for optional inclusion of a Specialist and Diagnostic testing benefit with no excess.
Tower also has a product known as Easy Health which is virtually an automatic acceptance but with no pre-existing conditions covered at all and all claims underwritten at claim time. After 3 years the policy will allow some conditions to be covered that were known at the time the policy was issued, however, a number of conditions will never be covered.

ING Life
ING has a philosophy to give clients what they expect to receive where possible. Once a policy is issued they do not alter the terms at a later date.
When combined with other Life insurance benefits you will receive a discount on your Major Medical premium.
ING health insurance offers benefits that aren’t generally offered by other health insurers, in particular; Pharmaceutical cover.
100% reimbursement of reasonable changes (as defined in the policy) up to policy maximums. For major surgery cover is provided up to $200,000. A range of excesses are available.
Drug treatment costs for major illnesses and diseases, such as cancer, are covered – whether or not they’re subsidised by Pharmac (the government drug governing body), provided the drugs are Medsafe approved.
ING pay for medical treatments by alternative medical providers such as naturopaths, homeopaths and acupuncturists. Health Insurance cover is also offered if the clients are in Australia (even if they are there indefinitely) up to the NZ equivalent costs for the same procedure.
The product also allows for optional inclusion of a Specialist and Diagnostic testing benefit with a minimum $250 excess.

Sovereign has an “A+ (Superior)” claims paying rating, assigned by AM Best Company, Inc of New Jersey USA.(28 December 2007).

For Superior Health and Superior 3 Health, AIG Life has received an ‘A+’ rating, as well as improved ratings for Trauma.

AIG’s product is called Superior Health and it provides 100% reimbursement of reasonable changes (as defined in the policy) up to policy maximums. For major surgery cover is provided up to $200,000. A range of excesses is available.
The product also allows for optional inclusion of a Specialist and Diagnostic testing benefit with the same excess as taken for the base Hospital and Surgical cover. AIG also provides a policy known as Superior 3 Health which does not include any pre-existing conditions but allows for the consideration of some conditions after 3 years.
